EVERY LINE HAS A STORY •
Jini Van De Water’s journey as an artist is as textured and evocative as the western scenes she so passionately renders. Born in Iowa, Jini’s first decade of life was spent surrounded by the rolling heartland until her family was upended by the sudden loss of her father, prompting a childhood relocation to Arizona—a landscape that lit her imagination with it’s stark contrast of broad deserts and rugged mountains. These early impressions, shaped by a long train ride to the great Southwest, still course through her creativity vision today.
Though she always loved to draw—particularly animals—artistic training seemed just out of reach for many years. Art classes were never a possibility in her youth and her career followed a different path altogether, landing her in the medical field that took her to many separate places, including cities, ranches, and farms all over the country. Even though her life went in a different direction, her passion for art never went away. It was at 55, seeking solace during her husband’s illness, that Jini gave herself permission to give art a "real chance." Diving into recommended books, self-teaching through countless YouTube tutorials, she honed her skills, experimenting relentlessly through trial and error and hours of practice. She developed a unique way of drawing directly on canvas to make a smooth detailed look.
As it turns out, there was a streak of artistry in her family lineage. Jini’s great-uncle painted murals on business walls during the 1920s and 1930s. A revelation that strengthened her sense of creative heritage. This connection to her family’s creative past made her appreciate her own work more. Her art often shows scenes from American pioneer history. You can see animals in motion, the heat rising as a stagecoach stops for a respite and steam engines crossing old wooden bridges. Each picture captures both movement and historical authenticity. She says she enjoys telling stories through her art and capturing silly things animals and children do.
Jini’s artistic process thrives on detail and narrative, requiring a drawing surface that can withstand her love of nuance. She favors hot-pressed paper but has innovated techniques to create similarly refined surfaces on canvas, marrying affordability and practicality with her high standards. Her technique draws from the classic traditions of realistic graphite and charcoal western art, her chosen touchstones.
Though relatively new to the exhibition scene, Jini has made swift and notable impressions at regional art shows: One. Earning first place at the Graham County Fair, Two. winning Best of Show, People's Choice, first and third place at the Pow Wow Art Show in Comanche, Texas, Three. Winning the Kohler Award in the Juried Art Show in Brownwood, Texas, Four. winning Best of Show, First, second and third places in Gustine Art Show and Five. Winning First, Third and People's Choice at the 2025 Pow Wow. Also being selected as one of three VIP Artists at an upcoming event in 2026. Her work is held in private collections, most notably with a dedicated collector in Georgetown, Texas, for whom she has completed six commissioned pieces. Viewers admire her incredible attention to detail, the scale of her work and the feelings she brings to scenes of the American West. Even people who don't usually like Western art find something to love in her art.
Jini is currently the secretary of the Comanche Art Association and is a member of the Brownwood Art Association, embedding herself in Texas's creative community since her recent move. Away from the studio, she raises miniature donkeys, tends to her garden and finds inspiration and peace in the mountain wilderness and the ocean views.
For Jini Van De Water, art is a way to keep history alive, to spark a memory and joy, to remind people of the past while inviting them to imagine the world as it could be. She sees her art as a kind of storytelling that connects people to their roots and encourages them to find wonder in the details of everyday life.
